Writing for Theatre with Fraser Grace
In association with Menagerie Theatre Company

The Improvising Mind: The Space Between my Ears

This is an intensive, day-long workshop exploring the centrality of improvisational thinking to the dramatist’s art. As well as being useful in its own right for writers interested in developing a play, this day course will also serve as the start of a Short Course exploring vital aspects of the dramatist’s art.

Promising work from those taking the course as a whole, or the Manuscript Consultation sessions, will be considered for further development and potential showcasing at the Hotbed Festival by Menagerie.

Fraser Grace

Fraser has worked as a playwright for almost twenty years, following stints as actor and performance poet. His first play for theatre was Perpetua (joint winner of the 1996 Verity Bargate Award). More recently he has written Gifts of War and Frobisher’s Gold for Menagerie Theatre. His play Breakfast with Mugabe was produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, eventually transferring to the West End, and was named joint winner of the John Whiting Award for best new play of 2006. Plays for radio include Bubble (with Andrea Porter 2004), and Breakfast with Mugabe, 2006, winner of the 2007 Silver Sony Award. He has previously taught playwriting at the University of Birmingham, and currently directs a similar course at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.

Fraser is currently writing an opera; Don’t Breathe A Word, with the composer Andrew Lovett, and a new play for the National Theatre. His plays are published by Oberon books.
