Clare Alexander was a publisher for more than 20 years before becoming an agent in 1998.  From 1990-1997 she was Publishing Director at Viking where she edited Pat Barker, Helen Dunmore, Alex Garland, Donna Tartt and William Trevor among others. She was then Editor-in-Chief at Macmillan, which incorporated the Macmillan, Pan and Picador imprints. Novelists whom she now represents include Sarah Dunant, Susan Elderkin, Mark Haddon, Liz Jensen, Gillian Slovo and Penny Vincenzi, as well as best-selling children's book author Louise Rennison.  She also represents a number of historians and biographers, including John Cornwell, Caroline Moorehead and Andrew Wilson.
