travelled extensively in the Middle East, an area that features
prominently in his writing. He is the author of several books
including a novel Shooting the Breeze, and the highly
acclaimed The Pharaoh’s Shadow, which is a search for
surviving ancient culture in modern Egypt and was the subject of a
Radio 4 documentary, and most recently The Gates Of Africa:
Death, Discovery & The Search For Timbuktu. He has written
for many UK publications, including the Times Literary
Supplement and The Literary Review, and has been a
regular contributor to the Sunday Times Books and Travel
sections for the past fifteen years.
