José Eduardo Agualusa, author, journalist, and playwright, was
born in Huambo, Angola. He won the
Independent Foreign Fiction in 2007 for his novel The Book
of Chameleons, the story of a man who sells pasts, and an
exploration of the enigma of human memory. He is the author of a
number of other books which have been translated into many European
languages: Nação Crioula has been published in English as
Creole (2002). He has also written a play for
theatre entitled W Generation. As the recipient of various grants
from Portuguese and German foundations he has been resident in Goa
and in Berlin, and otherwise divides his time between Portugal,
Angola and Brazil. In 2006 he set up the Brazilian publishing house
Língua Geral, which publishes books originally written in
Portuguese.
His upcoming novel My Father’s Wives is to be published in
June by Arcadia.
